Steps Toward Accessibility: Improving User Experience Through OCR

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Optical character recognition (OCR) is an essential tool for improving the accessibility and usability of electronically delivered files, but one that is not a standard feature of current resource sharing systems. The presenters will discuss the implementation of OCR software as part of interlibrary loan operations at two academic libraries: the University of Minnesota, where it was incorporated into the document delivery and lending workflow, and the University of Maryland, where it enhances borrowing and document delivery services. They will share lessons learned from their own experiences, address common misconceptions surrounding the use of OCR, and lead a conversation about the provision of OCR within next generation ILL management systems.
